1. 1. Slipping and falling on ice prevention:

Everyone knows that ice is slippery, especially if you live in a cold weather are where the snow can build up easily and quickly.  What we don’t always know is where the ice is.  Looking ahead of where you walk and spotting the ice before you take a step onto the slippery surface is by far the best preventative measure that you can take action on with out any help from anyone else.  Of course, it is important to use a melting agent such as salt to keep the walkways from freezing but ice can still form on the ground if the temperature is low enough.  A safety banner with t slogans such as “Walk safely please when walkways freeze.”, or “Take it slow in the ice and snow.” As a reminder that the area can be dangerous even if you are just walking. 

2. 2. Frostbite prevention:

There are several symptoms to watch out for preventing frostbite.  The first signs of frostbite are cold skin, a pons and needle or prickling feeling under the skin and numbness.  Mild frostbite will irritate the skin, leaving a red, cold feeling then progressing to numbness.  As soon as you notice any of these symptoms get to a heated place and begin to warm yourself up.  If the frost bite progresses you will begin to have skin discolorations of white, yellow, and grey.  Blisters will begin to form, and your skin may feel warm again.  If this happens you will need to seek medical attention immediately to repair the damages caused by the cold.  The last stage is by far the worst, your skin will turn black, and necrosis will begin to set I, often when this stage is reached amputation may be the only option for recovery, so please stay warm.  A safety banner with all the symptoms and stages of frostbite to educate everyone is a perfect way to bring up awareness and prevention.  If they can read the information every day on a safety banner, then they will have no excuses.

3. 3. Hypothermia prevention:

We often think of hypothermia as something that happens if you fall into a cold or frozen body of water.  The truth is hypothermia is caused when the temperature of the body drops below 95 degrees for a prolonged period of time. The 5 signs of hypothermia are shivering, exhaustion, clumsiness, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness.  The only way to prevent hypothermia is to wear the proper attire to keep you warm enough without sweating.  Wearing a knit cap or hat will help to retain up to 70% of your bodies heat.  If you are working outside for long periods of time in the cold winter clothing and jackets serve more as personal protective equipment and should be seen that way.  Safety banners are great reminders for anyone who will be working in the cold to use the proper winter clothing and to stay warm if needed.

Prevention of winter injuries and accidents is only possible if everyone is aware of all the risks, symptoms and correct measures needed for safety and a safety banner is one of the easiest ways to increase education and awareness.
